Ladder of Divine Ascent

I realized that I never posted this completed painting. It’s based on a book by the same name, and on the many renditions and icons of this theme that have gone before. But rather than a ladder, I used personal iconography in the form of a partially-built gravity dock once found in Allouez Bay on Lake Superior. I utilized blueprints in its construction. And rather than falling priests and monks, I used flowers and minnows… I hope you enjoy it.

Current Project

I’m currently working on a seven panel project that will measure approximately 40 in tall x 14 ft. long. After an extensive underdrawing, I’m now painting in oils.

Small Work Completed

Aside from a few details, this painting is done. Untitled as of yet.

Much more work is needed on both the painting and the boat, but things are coming along on this as yet untitled 12″x12″ work. 

An Older Work

This painting, called Belknap Street Yards is oil with gas fire on panel.

I’ve been trying some new things lately, but after seeing some of my earlier work at my show, The Arrow That Flies By Day here in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, I’ve come to realize that while trying for something different is often times needed, it doesn’t always work out. My older work is just generally better. I’m grateful I was able to see much of this work for the first time in years in some cases, as it gave me a new perspective on my strengths and weaknesses as an artist, which is exactly what I needed. I’m excited for the work ahead.
