Statement
My interests lie primarily in the relationship between the temporal and the eternal as
expressed by my subject matter, the post-industrial cities of America’s rust belt, and more recently, the ancient religious structures of Italy. The first represents irreverence,
estrangement from the past, anxiety. The second might be seen as serenity, beauty,
resolution, and hope. But within each, and at their core, is struggle. The struggle to be good, to aspire amid the trials of this life, the struggle to transcend. I address these relationships using a very personal language of visual associations based largely on memory of my formative years living in the port city of Superior, Wisconsin.
